What Is a Player Prop Bet?

A player prop market, short for player proposition, is a market concerned only with the performance of a particular player in a particular aspect of the game. These bets are not affected by the overall outcome of the match, whether that is the final score, the number of goals, or the number of corners. That independence is the appeal. You can win a player prop even when your team loses, because you are betting on one slice of the action, not the result.

Player props are also easy to place. A football player prop market looks at just one aspect of a player’s contribution and asks whether the player does or does not do what the market states during the game. Most player prop markets are binary: either yes or no, or over and under. Below are the most common football player prop markets you will encounter at online sportsbooks, grouped into goalscorer markets, shots markets, and fouls and cards markets.

Goalscorer Markets

If you think a game will have three or four goals in it, back a player to score anytime or even to score two or more. But if you think goals will be at a premium, you are better off backing a single player at say 12.0 to be first scorer than two players at 3.0 to score anytime. Reading the likely flow of goals is the first skill in goalscorer props.

First Goalscorer

Which player will score the first goal of the game? If the first goal is an own goal, the market settles on who scores the second. If there is no second goal, or no goals at all, then no goalscorer settles as the winner, and that is one of the runners you can back in the market.

To Score Anytime

It does not matter whether it is the first goal of the game or not. You just need the player you backed to score at any point in the match. This is the most popular goalscorer prop because it gives your selection the whole 90 minutes to deliver.

To Score 2 or 3 Goals

You can also back a player to score two or more goals, or three or more goals, in the game. In most cases the odds on two or more would be at least 5.0, and at least 9.0 on three or more, often much bigger. These are high-risk, high-reward props best saved for in-form strikers against weak defences.

Shots Markets

A shot that hits the crossbar or post is not considered a shot on target. Instead it is counted as an off-target shot, because the crossbar and post are not considered part of the goal. This one rule decides a lot of shots-on-target bets, so keep it in mind.

The betting site states in its rules which source it uses to settle player prop bets, usually Opta or Stats Perform. A different source can produce a different stat, meaning one source may credit a player with three shots on target and another with only two. So if a bet settles in a way you did not expect, the data source is often the reason. Always check which provider your sportsbook uses.

Player Shots on Target

This market is based on whether the named player will manage a set number of shots on target in the match. For example, will the striker have three or more shots on target? Only efforts that would go in without a save or a block count here.

Player Shots

Here the shots do not need to be on target. Whether the effort ends up in the back of the net, saved by the keeper, or five metres over the bar is irrelevant. What matters is that the player attempted to score with a shot. Attacking players who shoot often are the obvious picks.

Fouls and Cards Markets

Finally, the markets where your selections are typically yes or no. Fouls and cards are a big part of any football match, and if you know that a team, or both, are prone to aggressive play, these markets are a strong choice. Derby games, high-stakes knockouts, and physical defenders all push these numbers up.

Player to Be Shown a Card

Will the named player receive a yellow or red card during the game? Either will do for the purposes of this bet. Physical defenders and holding midfielders who make lots of tackles are natural candidates.

Player to Be Sent Off

Here you need the player to actually see red, though it does not matter whether it is a straight red or two yellows leading to a red. This is a longer-odds market, best used sparingly on hot-headed players in heated fixtures.

Player to Commit 1, 2, or 3+ Fouls

Will the named player commit a certain number of fouls? For this market, being caught offside does not count as a foul, though some betting sites offer separate markets on how often a player is caught offside.

Player to Suffer 1, 2, or 3+ Fouls

Similar to above, but this time it is the number of fouls suffered rather than committed. In this case, a handball, whether deliberate or not, does count as a foul committed by the offender. Skilful dribblers who get fouled a lot are the players to target here.

Success Through Stats: A Player Prop Strategy

Player props reward research, projection, and discipline over gut feeling. The winning idea is simple: project a player’s output more accurately than the market, then bet only when the line disagrees with your projection. A player can be excellent and the matchup can be favourable, yet the bet can still be bad if the price does not leave room for error. Here is the framework the sharpest bettors use.

• Focus on usage, not names. A lesser-known player with a big role can be a better bet than a star who is quiet in this system. Track shots, minutes, and involvement.
• Bet early. Prop lines are often softest when they first post, before the market corrects. Early value is a core edge.
